Reformer is one of the few movement practices where what you wear genuinely matters. The carriage moves. The straps loop around your hands and feet. You'll spend half the class upside down, on your back, or in a side plank watching your reflection. Loose, oversized, or unsupportive pieces don't quietly disappear — they get in the way.
This is a guide to dressing for reformer with intention. Not for the camera, not for the trend. For the practice.
What reformer Pilates actually asks of your clothing
Reformer is slow, controlled, and full-range. Your clothing needs to move with you without:
- Riding up over your hips when you're inverted
- Flipping up over your face when you're on your back
- Catching on the straps, springs, or carriage
- Losing support during deeper work
The right pieces let you forget what you're wearing. That's the goal.
What to look for
A short list, in order of importance:
- A high-rise, secure waistband. Anything mid-rise will roll. A high-rise that stays at your natural waist is non-negotiable.
- A fitted top. Loose t-shirts and crops without support flip up the moment you lie back. A halter, crop, or fitted long-sleeve solves this.
- Built-in support. A sculpting top with an integrated bust means one less layer, one less adjustment.
- Four-way stretch. Reformer asks for length and rotation in equal measure. Your fabric should follow both.
- No hardware. Zips, buckles, and metal trims dig in on the carriage. Choose clean lines.
- Length that lands. Leggings or flares that pool at the ankle catch on the foot loops. Flares that ride high look incomplete. Choose a length tailored to your frame.
What we'd wear
A few combinations that hold up across a full reformer class:
The clean set — Muse Halter in Black with the Elara Flares in your length (Petite or Tall). The halter neckline gives full shoulder mobility through arm work; the high-rise waistband on the flares stays put through every spinal articulation.
The neutral set — Muse Halter in Cocoa or Porcelain White with the Elara Flares. Softer through the chest area, lighter through the studio mirrors.
A note on length — the Elara Flares come in two inseams: 79cm Petite (for under 168cm) and 85cm Tall (for 168cm+). On the carriage, length matters more than usual. A flare that's right for your frame will sit cleanly at the foot loop instead of bunching or catching.
What to bring
- Grip socks. Most studios require them. Keep a pair in your bag, not your car.
- A water bottle. You'll need it more than you expect.
- A layer for after. You cool down quickly walking out — an oversized knit or jacket finishes the look without breaking it.
After class
The right pieces don't need changing. Reformer to coffee, reformer to school pickup, reformer to the rest of the day — the same set carries through. That's the point.
